42 DAY$$$

Published:

Anthony Barnett (London, OK): I have just noticed this report in the Telegraph by Robert Winnett:

"Today, Miss [Jacqui] Smith has a meeting with Muslim MPs during which she is expected to indicate her backing for compensation payments to terror suspects held for more than 28 days who are not subsequently charged. Innocent detainees may be entitled to claim up to £3,000 for each day spent in jail."

Is there a new funding model here for public interest websites? Note well the phrase "innocent detainees". This says it all, as I argued in Abundance of Caution. If people are innocent and have been held for 27 days, as we know they have been, why shouldn't they be paid compensation too? What this means is that the government knows it is doing something wrong.
