It may well be that humankind will destroy itself through its differences over holy places and sacred territory. But below the surface, the earth is tuned in to galactic rhythms. And our planet is like a great peaceful whale listening across the oceans, despite the parasites who fight and squabble for the best places under its fins.

This, at least, was my feeling after seeing a link to Space Science just sent me by a good friend and astronomer.  It reports, "Scientists from the Ulysses mission have proven that sounds generated deep inside the Sun cause the Earth to shake and vibrate in sympathy. They have found that Earth's magnetic field, atmosphere and terrestrial systems, all take part in this cosmic sing-along". There are some great pictures too, of how it happens. Here is one of the best, of the Sun-Earth connection via solar winds and magnetism. We are not able to hear it with our poor natural instruments, but deepest space isn't silent after all: it rocks.
