Behind the news of suffering and conflict in Darfur, some women are finding ways to move forward and claim the rights granted to them in the 2005 Sudan Interim Constitution.

Professor Balghis Badri is Director of the Institute of Women, Gender and Development at Ahfad University in Sudan. She spoke to Jane Gabriel about the women who have been empowered in the midst of conflict.

Professor Badri has researched and written extensively on the contemporary Sudanese women’s movement and its evolution in the past twenty years, on feminism and Islam and the challenges facing Sudanese women, on legal reform and the Interim Constitution (pdf), and on the legislative rights of adolescent and Sudanese women.
