38 degrees has been launched. It promises to bring direct web campaigning to the UK, modelled on MoveOn in the States. That worked in its time thanks to being part of the Democratic movement. Can the same approach bite here with a campaign that isn't anchored in party politics? Well, yes because the progressive movement in Britain is in such a dire place. Anything that can help dig us out and democratise Britain is welcome. Both Sunny and Guido have said their hello's too (with a grumpy aside about the name - the tipping point of an avalanche). I've signed up and so should you. But I've not signed their petition for the recall of MPs which is their launch campaign. I agree with the principle. But the next question is what proportion of voters are needed to trigger a by-election? Clare Coatman says 30 per cent. I think 15 per cent. Or perhaps not. The 38 degrees doesn't give a figure at all. Far from this reassuring me, by leaving it open it makes me think I don't know what I am signing up for at all. I want to know what range they have decided on and why. Sharpness is needed in campaigning in my view - so good luck to the team as they wrestle with these issues and other startup headaches (eg integrating the blog so you can get back to the main pages) not to speak of Matt Wardman's questions. We need web democracy.
