Anthony Barnett (London, OK): Just watched Newsnight. They were there in David Davis's constituency. Michael Crick, the famous investigative journalist, does some fascinating vox pops. He asks a passer-by whether she agrees with 42 days for "locking up terrorists". Hold on a second - the whole point is that at least half of them are NOT terrorists, indeed they are held in the police version of a vox pop in the course of anti-terrorist raids amd are "innocent members of the public". The BBC seems to be leaning against DD. A thoughful man getting out of his car says he does not understand why Davis is resigning on this issue and concludes that he does not think 42 days is "long enough". I felt quite sure he was talking about terrorists, not Muslims as thoughtful as himself. A nervous young woman who has got a lot closer to understanding the issue than Michael Crick (another non-reader) says that 42 days is "a long time if you are innocent". But, she adds, "it isn't if you are guilty". She was not asked, nor was anyone else, the key question, why not charge them much earlier with suspicion? Then if there is any evidence they can be held for much longer before trial.
