Short quote on David Davis

Published:

Anthony Barnett (London, OK): Michael Savage of the Independent's Open House asked me for a short quote on David Davis. It may be too late for inclusion in their round up, so here it is:
"I like what David Davis is doing very much. He is taking the issue to the people. Everyone says that voters support 42 days without charge, but that it is because they think it applies to terrorists not the innocent. It's Murdoch who is the elitist, manipulating populism and - alas - our Prime Minister. And he is making Cameron nervous too. Now David Davis is setting out to break the spell:  the idea that the public is an authoritarian mob, stupid, with no sense of history or belief in liberty. He deserves all the help he can get."
I'm picking up a sense that the commentators and in a way the whole political class dislike what Davis has done. A perhaps classic example is John Rentoul's Indie post. They want to play everything in terms of people and hate the prospect of having to deal with ideas and principles. There are no great issues at stake, says Rentoul, the proposal is a little bit of this and a little bit of that, and that's all. Exception Martin Bright. And great post by Iain Dale who was "DD's" campaign manager when he ran for the Tory leadership. My immediate reaction below.
